Volunteers are currently involved in a long-term project to rehabilitate or rebuild sections of the Greeter Falls access trail in the Savage Gulf area of the park.
The Trails Team of the Friends of South Cumberland State Park is looking for additional volunteers to assist with these much-needed improvements.
South Cumberland State Park has 12 trailheads, spread across four counties — Grundy, Marion, Franklin and Sequatchie. Visitation data shows that the Savage Gulf West trailhead, which leads to Greeter Falls, is consistently one of the top three busiest trailheads in the Park.
Heavy use of the Greeter Falls-area trails has resulted in significant trail wear and erosion. In addition, the condition of the trails is making it more difficult for SCSP Rangers and EMTs to extricate injured visitors from this area. SCSP averages over 1.6 Ranger-assisted rescues per week, according to Park managers.
The Trails Team is looking for volunteers to assist with the trail rehab project, which will involve both “dirt work” and the construction of a new staircase structure that will bypass a particularly wet and challenging section of trail on its route to and from Greeter Falls.
Upcoming Trail Team work days are posted on the website the Friends of South Cumberland State Park at FriendsOfSouthCumberland.org. Please check there for the latest info, and links to photos of recent trail work progress.
