A small crayfish found only in three Alabama creeks in the Tennessee River Basin is now federally protected. Following a rigorous scientific review, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the slenderclaw crayfish as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The listing means the crayfish is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range.
